What We Support

Schneider Children's Medical Center of Israel

The Schneider Children’s Medical Center of Israel is the largest children’s hospital in the country. Since its establishment, the hospital has revolutionised the practice of paediatric medicine in Israel. It is recognised as one of the leading paediatric institutions in the world.

Schneider Children’s Medical Center of Israel is the only comprehensive, tertiary care hospital of its kind in the country and in the Middle East, offering the full range of pediatric disciplines under one roof to all children from 0-18.

Since its establishment in 1991, Schneider Children’s has revolutionised the practice of pediatric medicine in the country and been recognised as one of the leading pediatric institutions in the world.

Schneider derives its name from its founders and major benefactors, the late Irving and Helen Schneider from New York, who also promoted its legacy to serve as a Bridge to Peace between nations. Through this open-door policy, where all children irrespective of race, religion or nationality are treated, Schneider Children’s receives patients from neighbouring countries including the Palestinian Authority and Jordan, and from as far away as Africa, Asia and Eastern Europe.

Schneider Children’s comprises 250 beds, 43% of which are assigned to critical care (Intensive Care Units, Neonatology, Burns, etc.). The medical centre serves as the national referral centre for Hematology-Oncology, Endocrinology and Diabetes, Cardiology, and organ and bone marrow transplantation.

JUST FOR CHILDREN

Schneider Children’s is all about children. It utilises a unique approach to pediatric medicine where children are treated as children and not as small adults. Since they have different emotional and physical resources for healing, Schneider Children’s utilises a “whole-child-care” multidisciplinary approach, whereby treatment is integrated with emotional, psychological, educational and developmental care.

MEDICAL EXCELLENCE

Schneider Children’s has led many firsts in Israel and the world: multi-organ transplantation, cardiac surgery in a 780gm preemie, heart valve replacement through catheterisation, the discovery of new genes for mental retardation, artificial pancreas trials, and innovative surgical and therapeutic techniques. Two physicians are recipients of Israel’s highest award: the Israel Prize for Medical Research.

ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE

Schneider Children’s is a member of Clalit Health Services - the largest HMO in Israel - and its only pediatric centre of 14 hospitals. Through its affiliation with the Sackler School of Medicine at Tel Aviv University, every department conducts the teaching and training of doctors, medical students, nurses and paramedical personnel. Over half its physicians serve on Sackler’s medical faculty, while some 14% hold the title of professor.

In creating a hospital exclusively for infants, children and adolescents, Schneider Children’s responded to a real need and adopted world standards of hospital professionalism. But its real success lies in its pioneering spirit, the quality and dedication of its staff, and the devotion of its supporters and volunteers. All these have combined to create a winning combination of medical excellence and a unique environment for children. This is the core of the medical centre.

THE PAST

The ceremony of laying the cornerstone for Schneider Children’s Medical Center was held in April 1988. The charter of Schneider Medical Center was signed at the ceremony, and it was interred under the foundations of the building. The charter read: this medical centre, which is dedicated to the fundamental right of each and every child to live a healthy life in a peaceful world, will become a bridge for peace and will connect this nation to its neighbours. Indeed, the hospital offers care to children from all parts of the country and the world.

THE PRESENT

Schneider Medical Center is unique of its kind in Israel in that it is designated for children. It incorporates expertise in all fields of pediatric specialisation. It is a referral focal point from all hospitals in Israel. It offers medical treatment to children from all over Israel as well as other countries. It fulfils the vision of its founding fathers to become a bridge to peace and to promote goodwill in the Middle East.

THE FUTURE

The 7-story new wing now under construction consists, like the existing building, of 36,000 square meters, 30,000 of which are to be built-up areas.

All the hospitalisation departments will be transferred to the new wing. They will be constructed in a high-end hotel-like standard, with exceptional architectural design, spacious hospitalisation rooms and upscale work stations for the medical and caregiving staff.

An advanced institute for clinical research of diseases will be set up in the new wing, as well as a hospitalisation department earmarked for children who had undergone transplants. The psychological medicine division will be upgraded. The new wing will be protected to withstand times of emergency, including a protected neonatal facility and a protected dialysis unit.

The values of excellence, innovation and service which have guided Schneider since its inception will continue to be implemented in the new wing.
